1980 Outstanding U.S. Olympian Award

Winning Bid: $350.00

A silver medalist at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Greg was a favorite to win the gold in both the 3 meter springboard and the 10 meter platform events at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. However, the U.S. made the decision to boycott the Summer Games that year in protest of Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan. Despite that, many teams held alternative events or found other ways to honor their members. Presented is an Outstanding U.S. Olympian trophy awarded to Greg in 1980.

This is one of very few pieces of memorabilia that he has from the Team USA events related to the boycotted 1980 Games. The trophy consists of a silver bowl sitting atop a wooden platform with an engraved metal placard. The total height is approximately 7″. Greg has signed the bottom in black felt tip marker. This trophy exhibits a fair amount of wear, with heavy tarnishing to the bowl, scratching, scuffing, and chipping to the wood base.
