Frances Louganis Personal Scrapbook

In 1976, at the age of 16, competitive diver Greg Louganis placed second in the platform event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 he made his second appearance at the Olympic Games, taking home the gold medal in both the 3 meter springboard and the 10 meter platform event. He would do the same at the 1988 Olympics, becoming the only man to sweep the events in consecutive Olympic Games.

Presented is a scrapbook from the 1976 Olympic Games and its surrounding events, personally created and owned by Greg’s mother, Frances Louganis. The scrapbook clearly shows the love and pride that Frances had for her son as he rose to success. It includes such items as personal telegrams from President Gerald Ford, a picture of the 1976 Olympics US Diving Team, several clippings from local and national newspapers, personal snapshots of Louganis and his family celebrating his participation in the Olympics, a First Day of Issue Olympic Postage Stamp, dated July 16, 1976, a clipping of the official scorecard from Louganis’ event, and more. The leather-bound scrapbook displays moderate aging, with wear to the cover and inside pages. The contents of the book are well-preserved within plastic film coverings.
